Four New Dolls

This is work in progress. Four new dolls. Four new faces on the way in my Etsy shop.

Work in Progress

This is what they look like before their skin is painted, eyes given life and hair sewn in. As you’ll notice, there are no legs. Why? Because these are bag holder dolls in progress not art dolls.

Below is a small gallery of dolls currently available for adoption in my Etsy shop at www.Sundrip.etsy.com .

I’m in love with doll making and have currently thrown my energy into them. For a little while I thought I was finished creating them but the drive is quite strong right now so I will continue to sew, paint and present. I hope you like them.

Finally it happened to me

The dry spell is over! I painted up a storm today. I completed the painting The Young Violinist as well as worked on a few other pieces such as flower girls and another sisters painting. It felt good.

The Last Reign

The Final Reign - Available“The Last Reign” is in the Visionary Original Paintings gallery as well as in my Etsy shop.

This 5.5 x 8.5 mixed media piece showcases deep colors and moody lines. It is truly a Sundrip piece in that I’ve painted edge to edge with imagery everywhere you look.

There are masks or what some may call face shields. There are people and washes of color. Blue, gold, black, and red shape images of human figures with history written on their faces.  Continue reading “The Last Reign”

Jane’s GardenBlooms

Jane's Flowers Bloom - Available Dr. D asked why African Americana is one of my favorite types of art. I like it because its simple. I like faceless black rag dolls and faceless black art. This little 4 x 7 piece is a simple illustration of country home life. It shows a mother and child in the garden with the flowers blooming in beautiful white all around. The mother gives her daughter a single bloom.

One of the other things I appreciate most about simple, primitive art is that I can give it my own story. Did a mother give her daughter a flower or did the woman gift her younger self? Did the younger person give the flower but the hand movement isn’t shown? Was the flower given on impulse of love? Maybe it was the perfect flower for the perfect friend. In primitive art such as in “Jane’s flowers Bloom,” the story isn’t spelled out for me in strict detail; it’s hinted at and whispered through the field.  Continue reading “Jane’s GardenBlooms”

African American Art Doll. African Inspired Custom Order.

African American Art DollI remember saying I wasn’t going to do dolls anymore. I just couldn’t get into it the way I was. Something interesting happened though, a woman who purchased a doll from me in 2009 contacted me to ask if I still make dolls. She wanted the doll to look a certain way. At first I was nervous because I thought, how am I going to make a doll when my head is a total mess and my body is running on the fumes of fumes. Still, I said yes. I’m happy I did. I really needed to remember that I can still make a quality doll.

I was concerned about making her without a down payment because a few doll sales fell through. I was a bit cautious but with a down payment in hand I went ahead and made her doll.

Just like before, no pattern was used. I used my machine to sew the main parts of the lower body. The head was sewn by hand. She is painted from head to toe by hand. Her face is hand drawn and painted. Her hair is two different types of yarn that give it a nice dark texture. Continue reading “African American Art Doll. African Inspired Custom Order.”

Rooted Hearts 1 – an Etsy Treasury

Rooted Hearts 1 an ETSY Treasury

Ah yes, another treasury list on ETSY. This is a two part treasury which includes paintings, jewelry and vessels. There are twenty four pieces in all. Today I’ve opened up part one.

Rooted Hearts Double Treasury
Is dedicated to our grandfathers, our roots and our sense of being.
For the beautiful woman, for turquoise, bone and copper.
For warriors and gentlemen.
For our children.
For beads used to adorn, and vessels to hold our hearts.
Rooted, we are.

The letter sent to all twenty four artists explained the premise of the treasury in this way. It is an artistic arrangement of ethnic women and men in their ever changing form. I have included art and jewelry of different styles but have kept the theme to specific colors such as turquoise, copper, abstract linear art, beads and vessels.

Some of the treasury tags you might notice hopefully shows that the treasury is a peaceful, international and uplifting arrangement. The artists are from Texas to the Netherlands, Kenya to Chicago as well as from France, Russia, Ukraine and Belarus in Eastern Europe. It is an international gathering of art to promote the beauty of our roots which ground and nurture our future.
