Rooted Hearts 1 – an Etsy Treasury

Rooted Hearts 1 an ETSY Treasury

Ah yes, another treasury list on ETSY. This is a two part treasury which includes paintings, jewelry and vessels. There are twenty four pieces in all. Today I’ve opened up part one.

Rooted Hearts Double Treasury
Is dedicated to our grandfathers, our roots and our sense of being.
For the beautiful woman, for turquoise, bone and copper.
For warriors and gentlemen.
For our children.
For beads used to adorn, and vessels to hold our hearts.
Rooted, we are.

The letter sent to all twenty four artists explained the premise of the treasury in this way. It is an artistic arrangement of ethnic women and men in their ever changing form. I have included art and jewelry of different styles but have kept the theme to specific colors such as turquoise, copper, abstract linear art, beads and vessels.

Some of the treasury tags you might notice hopefully shows that the treasury is a peaceful, international and uplifting arrangement. The artists are from Texas to the Netherlands, Kenya to Chicago as well as from France, Russia, Ukraine and Belarus in Eastern Europe. It is an international gathering of art to promote the beauty of our roots which ground and nurture our future.

Priscilla Handmade African American Rag Doll and Sunflower

PDoll 1This is the very first item I am offering for the new year which really makes me smile.       SOLD

This young lady is a handmade African American rag doll with a hand painted face and handmade clothes. She’s a lovely girl, a shelf sitter girl to be added to your collection. Although she is sturdy, she is not meant to be a toy. The dolls photographed with her are part of my personal collection and are not for sale. They’re mine all mine. lol

Back to Priscilla. She is approximately 15 inches and has been hand painted and heat sealed three times. Her shoes are hand painted and sealed as well. Miss Priscilla’s dress is made of red, white and brown checked material. It’s not a bright red. I don’t know the names of these fabrics but I can tell you it used to be a skirt purchased for it’s material 🙂 It is the perfect look for a folk doll. Her little scarf is olive green with a tiny little gold dot to match the gold edges. (Please note: there is a gold dot spill on the scarf. It would have been worse had I attempted to correct it. I left it.) Priscilla is wearing tiny little white undies. Her short, simple hair is made of soft, textured yarn that resembles African American hair. As with many of my dolls I’ve given her a soft red glow on her cheeks, blue above her eyes and sweet lips.

The Wanderer – On Fallen Trees

1 In the woods d7The Wanderer is a nature scene of a young black boy sitting on a tree stump. His shirt is the same color as the roots of the trees that continued to grow the day I wandered into the woods through a host of fallen trees. I couldn’t believe the color. I’d never seen anything like it, such a beautiful and vibrant orange roots coming right out of rich, black earth. WOW!

This scene with the African American boy is based on that moment, the moment when I wandered into the woods.

The boy is sitting on the stump in his orange shirt and navy blue jeans with a tiny button. Beside him is a small red bird (cardinal). The bird is also hand sculpted without a cast. Meticulously placed are curly twigs from grape vines and blackberry vines. As in the real life wooded area, large flowers stand nearly frozen in time, as if dried in a flash. Yellow flowers, two white bushes, small hand picked rocks as well as tiny hand painted flowers have been added to a carpet of reindeer moss. The scene is stationed on a ceramic tile with a felt bottom. Continue reading “The Wanderer – On Fallen Trees”

Sage: a Queen on Her Throne

Sage - On Her Throne

At 27 inches in length, head to feet, Sage makes quite a statement.

Sage is a 100% handmade African-American rag doll, art doll. Her face is hand painted, her hair sewn in piece by piece. She can wear her hair down in dreadlocks or up in a headdress.  The Queen’s inner layered garment is a dusty lavender polyester. Her outer flowing floral garment is sheer rayon of lavender, cream and sage. The flowers in her hands are real lavender that were dried then painted. Sage wears a pendant and gemstone around her neck.

Not only is she hand stitched and hand painted, but her clothing is handmade as well. I also made the pendant she’s wearing and painted the flowers she’s holding. Continue reading “Sage: a Queen on Her Throne”

Infused Oils

All four

I’ve tried something new, infused oils. For this particular batch I used grapeseed oil to infuse hand cut, hand dried flowers to create a wonderfully fragrant infused oil that has many applications. This oil is not a perfume. Its strongest scent is brought out when used in the bath or heated for massage.

Here is a list of ways to best use this product:
**** Aromatherapy is the very fist thing that comes to mind. Put a small amount on your finger and swipe it under your nose leaving just enough to fill the senses and calm your nerves. KEEP CALM AND LAVENDER ON. Therapeutic properties.
**** Bath oil. Poor it into the hot water and let it fill the room.
**** Place oil on your legs and feet before putting on your socks or winter gloves.
**** Place a small amount on your lips during the winter to moisturize them.
**** Use as sensual oils for massage.
**** Used As Hair Oil – Since grape seed oil is non-greasy in texture and is odorless, it is preferred by people who do not like sticky hair oil. It easily gets absorbed by hair and nourishes it without giving a feeling that one has applied oil on the hair. This is wonderful for dreadlocks and natural African-American hair.

Birds on Fallen Trees

Birds on Fallen Trees – 9 x 8 clay and wood sculpture created almost entirely with found items. The cobble stones in clay were found items, the twigs are from 5 fallen trees, the birds are from a recycled art piece, real Pekin duck feathers have been added as well as dried flowers.

When I’m anxious I paint. When I’m anxious I walk. The other day was a walking day. While walking I decided to explore an area struck by last spring’s storms. In that area there are at least 5 trees uprooted. It’s as if they were effortlessly plucked and left on their side. Sad though the sight may sound, nature has created its own art piece. It’s the kind of art you only find in nature, the stuff artists  like me can’t come close to mimicking. Continue reading “Birds on Fallen Trees”

May Bell African-American Art Doll

May Bell Sunflower African American Folk Art DollI stopped calling May Bell a rag doll because she has so much character that she falls more into the art doll category. This isn’t my usual type of doll but I have to admit, I enjoyed making her.

May Bell is a beautifully elegant art doll who is handmade and hand painted. She stands approximately 8 inches with a rust and gold flowering dress that falls at 12 inches. May Bell’s hair is up in buns on both sides of her head, twisted perfectly and able to hold ribbons or flowers if desired. Her accenting Anne Klein II sunflower brooch is removable and can be placed where desired.

Sitting Asian Clay Figurine

SOLD

The sitting Asian figurine was hand sculpted with no mold, using polymer clay. Her arms are adjustable so that you can have her hold a flower, cross them or put them to her side. Her hair comes down from its bun at 3 inches long. Instead of a solid white Geisha face the figurine has darker skin with broader Asian features letting her natural features bloom.

This beautiful royal woman was also hand painted and given a handmade dress. Her hair is a soft brown and gray yarn, her clothing is red, black and gold rayon with large lotus flowers on it. Although she has been sealed and is water resistant I’d suggest she be placed in an inside garden or sun room.

Please see my Etsy shop link on the sidebar for purchase details.

A Joyful Child is a Rose

Art title: A Joyful Child is a Rose
This is a reconstructed Lee Bortin original. The figurine was discovered in disarray but there was no way I could leave her that way so I pulled out some clay, glue, paints and pens and went to work. I added yarn for hair and painted her clothing in pearl pink, purple and soft blues. She’s wearing pearl earnings, small pink roses in her hair and has small little pearl dots at the bottom of her dress along the soft blue trim. The figurine stands 9 inches tall. Joy’s skin tone is medium brown. Her long black yarn hair is braided and put in ponytails which are held by removable white ribbons. Adorable!
